Nishorgo Nondon, a second-year Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) student at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) has won the Gold Honour in the recently concluded International Youth Math Challenge 2023 (IYMC).

Nondon won the same honour last year as well. This year, securing the top 1% position among more than 13,000 participants from 98 countries, Nondon has remarkably solved 19 out of 20 problems in an impressive display of mathematical prowess.

Apart from Nondon, CSE students Sabah Naurin, who won the Bronze Honour by placing in the top 30%, and Amit Bikram Roy, who made it to the final round, also performed well. Notably, Tanvir Ahmed Tanmoy, student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), who competed on behalf of IUB, earned a Gold Honour.

IUB CSE department Professor Ashraful Amin, PhD, also Director of the Centre for Computational and Data Sciences (CCDS), supervised and mentored the participants throughout the competition.

IYMC is one of the biggest independent online global math competitions that is not affiliated to any organization or institution. Students from high schools and universities from around the world were divided into two groups: Junior (under 18 years) and Youth (18+). IUB’s Nishorgo Nondon competed in the Youth group.

The competition had several rounds of varying numbers of math problems and research paper analysis on topics such as geometry, algebra, differential equations, number theory, prime numbers, and so on.
